DermEngine Skin Photography
Digital skin imaging to support the assessment and ongoing monitoring of skin lesions.
What is DermEngine?
DermEngine is a digital dermatology imaging platform designed to support the photography, documentation and monitoring of skin lesions.
The technology allows dermatologists to capture and organise detailed images of moles and other skin lesions, creating a visual record that can be reviewed during future appointments.
This can be particularly helpful when monitoring selected lesions for changes in size, shape, colour or appearance.
DermEngine supports clinical assessment but does not replace a comprehensive skin examination or biopsy when one is required.
How can digital skin photography help?
Document skin lesions
Detailed photographs provide a visual record of selected moles and skin lesions at the time of examination.
Monitor changes over time
Images taken during different appointments can be compared to help identify visible changes in previously documented lesions.
Support clinical decisions
Digital images provide additional information that your dermatologist can consider when recommending ongoing monitoring, further investigation or treatment.
What happens during skin photography?
Digital skin photography is a quick and painless procedure.
01
Your dermatologist examines your skin and identifies any lesions that may benefit from photographic documentation.
02
Images of selected lesions are captured using suitable imaging equipment and recorded within the DermEngine platform.
03
Your dermatologist reviews the images alongside your clinical examination and medical history.
04
Where appropriate, photographs may be compared with images taken at future appointments to help assess changes over time.
Is digital skin photography suitable for everyone?
Digital skin photography may be useful for patients who require ongoing monitoring of selected moles or skin lesions.
However, not every lesion requires photographic monitoring, and some changes may need more immediate investigation.
Your dermatologist will recommend the most appropriate approach based on your individual circumstances.
Important: Digital skin photography is an additional clinical tool. It does not replace regular skin examinations, and photographs alone cannot confirm or exclude skin cancer.

Is digital skin photography painful?
No. Digital skin photography is non-invasive and generally involves taking photographs of the skin using specialised imaging equipment.
Can DermEngine detect skin cancer?
DermEngine helps dermatologists document and compare skin images. It does not independently diagnose skin cancer. Your dermatologist assesses any concerning findings and determines whether further investigation, including a biopsy, is necessary.
Will I need photographs taken at every appointment?
Not necessarily. Your dermatologist will determine whether additional images are required based on your skin concerns and monitoring plan.
Does digital skin photography replace a skin cancer check?
No. Digital photography complements clinical skin examinations but does not replace a comprehensive assessment by your dermatologist.
How much does DermEngine skin photography cost?
Fees depend on the imaging required. Please contact our clinic for current pricing and information about any applicable Medicare rebates.
